#GirlTechWM is a Millennium Point funded project, delivered by Ahead Partnership. The Millennium Point Trust is a Birmingham based charity whose aim is to increase engagement in science, technology and digital themes, to ensure people are equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge needed to live, work and connect in the modern world.

Contractors came together to facilitate this activity, aiming to raise awareness and understanding of the STEM sectors, and challenge gender stereotypes within the digital sector.

The day brought businesses together to raise students’ aspirations and to improve the employability skills of young people.

#GirlTechWM is an annual citywide event for young women aged 12-14 years old in the West Midlands. Targeting young women before they make their GCSE subject choices, providing them with information directly from employers on the opportunities within tech and digital.

The event is designed to allow the girls to meet female role models who work within digital whilst taking part in hands-on, interactive activities that show them what these jobs are really like.

#GirltechWM 2022 featured workshops, a mini challenge and key note speakers. The event met its
objectives of helping young women understand the skills needed to work in the digital sector and increasing their interest in digital.

Contractors from the Procure Partnerships Framework; Galliford Try, BAM & Burmor Construction each exhibited at the event promoting ‘Lego challenges’, plus, use of an iPad to demonstrate how ‘BIM’ is used on site. As well as the use of Strawbees to see who could build the highest stable tower.

Teachers Comment: “There were some fantastic activities organised for the students to get involved in, giving them an idea of the role that technology has in today’s world of work. The presentation was inspiring and informative and definitely encouraged some of our students to consider a career in technology. Great event to encourage equality and diversity in the workplace”

Yorkshire – St John University York TeenTech City of Tomorrow Event
Code Building Solutions and Diddy Saunders

Code Building Solutions flew the flag for our Yorkshire Collaborative Working Group this month by facilitating a construction-based activity to appeal to all.The spaghetti marshmallow tower challenge fitted the brief given by TeenTech and was well received by all students.

Diddy Saunders, Code: “Most students showed their competitive edge and wanted to achieve the tallest tower. They showed immense initiative in problem solving stability problems and evolving designs to suit. Designs varied and all students were happy and confident enough to develop their own design and not to look what others were creating. The majority worked in small teams, however some were keen enough to go solo and work alone.”

The activity was part of the Insight Zone and was timetabled to run 3 x 15 minute sessions in the morning and again the in afternoon to approximately 5 students per session. A total of 35 students engaged in the activity.

TeenTech events are designed to inspire students and give them an opportunity to try their hand at experiments focused towards engineering, technology & science that are influencing their 21st century lives.

TeenTech aims to dispel gender stereotypes and shift perceptions of careers teenagers may have considered ‘difficult’ or ‘geeky’ or boring’.

Sandra Cooper, Trustee, TeenTech “On behalf of TeenTech I would like to commend (the) hard work and enthusiasm throughout the day and for providing an interesting and engaging activity for the students from local Primary Schools. On the occasions I dropped into (the) area, students seemed to be having a great time and certainly learnt a great deal about structures and strength through your activity.”
