Procure Partnerships Framework Contractor Partner ISG is currently on-site making excellent progress on a £4M programme of works to transform the existing site in West Way, Chorley, to create a new Breathing Apparatus (BA) School on behalf of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
The project was secured via the Procure Partnerships North West Framework.
The new breathing apparatus school will provide the latest facilities and training to the fire fighters of Lancashire. The school has been designed as a self-contained and self-sufficient facility with a network of classrooms and workshop areas where delegates will learn how to prepare, operate and service compressed air breathing apparatus. Facilities include the provision of showers and changing spaces along with an innovative dirty-to-clean layout designed to minimise the spread of, and exposure to, contaminants during the removal of equipment and changing out of personal protective equipment.
Work is well underway on site, with the roof complete and solar PV installed. Externally the cladding is also complete and internally the team is progressing with the internal walls and M&E installation.
The completed building will target a BREEAM “Very Good” environmental performance rating and a ‘Zero Carbon’ designation for regulated energy use. As such the building is constructed to a high thermal insulation standard, with strict air permeability targets in a fabric-first approach to reducing energy use. The MEP services strategy includes a powerful synergy of air source heat pumps driving hot water and underfloor heating in combination with a solar PV array. This totally removes the need for natural gas, as well as meeting the needs for regulated power, with the facility to export excess electricity to the national grid.
ISG have faced many challenges on site such as Dealing with degassing of contaminants, and in particular carcinogens from PPE, but ISG continue to progress well and have shown commitment and professionalism throughout the scheme so far.
The Project is due for Completion by the end of 2021.
