Sewell Construction Complete First Phase Of Rutland Mills Transformation

Procure Partnerships Framework Contractor Partners Sewell Construction will soon complete a programme of Refurbishment and extension works at Rutland Mills, Tileyard North, on behalf of Wakefield Council and City and Provincial Properties.

The project was secured via the Procure Partnerships Yorkshire Framework.

Once complete the 135,000 sqft space will be transformed into a creative industry gem. The ambitious regeneration plan will convert the space into a mixed-use, inclusive, creative, and cultural cluster with world class facilities. The site is beautifully situated directly opposite the David Chipperfield’s Hepworth Gallery, making it an appropriate addition to the local area.

The project represents significant investment by Tileyard and CPP as they aim to create recording studios, postproduction studios, flexible workspaces, creative edit suites, an education space, delicious food and beverage offerings and aspirations for a hotel, along with investment into the public realm to form a new 30,000 sqft central courtyard/event space fully open to the public along with a new riverside walkway and improvement to the River Calder flood defences.

The site will also bridge the gap between the professional creative community in London and the North. The goal is to offer more creative space and opportunities for businesses to grow and flourish in the North, whilst still retaining a relationship and stake in the London creative scene.

Since Sewell Constructions start on site in November 2020 the team have ensured that social value has been at the heart of the project. Some of these activities consist of the following:

– Providing Work experience for five students currently studying at Wakefield College
– Undertaken a food collection which was then shared amongst several local food banks and organisations local to the project.
– In the Easter of 2020 over 500 Easter eggs were collected, with donations from Procure Partnerships Framework, which were shared amongst several local charities.
– supported the Prostate Cancer Charity and Andy’s Man Club and held several talks which supply chain attended.
– Promoted awareness of Mental Health as well as providing a Mental Health first aider and held a session the supply chain.
– Completed the Three peaks challenge and raised around £1800 which was donated to The Spectrum People.
– Donated surplus material to the Apple Tree community garden.
– provided labour and materials to the local Sea Cadets who were desperately in need of assistance in the upkeep of their buildings with some minor repairs and maintenance
– connected with Sandal Magna school and arranged for year 6 to visit site as part of their term course work, they completed a number of painting which were then made into posters and displayed around site hoarding. The school was then invited back to site to see their artwork in all its glory
– Over the course of the project, there has been several site tours with local politicians and council bodies
