Procure Partnerships Framework contractor partner Kier Construction has been chosen as preferred bidder to deliver a £5.5m new teaching block and sports centre extension for Burnley College. The project has a target completion date aligned with start of the academic year in September 2021. The project will expand teaching facilities on the site to meet imminent demand that cannot be accommodated in existing buildings.
Burnley College has been growing in student numbers for a number of years, with significant growth in the last two years seeing the existing facilities nearing capacity. With particular growth in local priority areas of engineering, advanced manufacturing, healthcare and construction, as well as general growth in higher level qualifications through A-Levels and Degrees, the College is planning to expand its facilities to meet the increased demand.
A new BREEAM Very Good rated Teaching Building, will create circa 2,500m2 of generic teaching space and social learning spaces across 4 floors, with a specialist mock ward area to support the College’s health and nursing course aims to be completed by September 2021.
The Sports Centre extension will provide circa 950m2 of new accommodation to provide a Strength Gym, running track, therapy suite, dance studio and 3 teaching spaces to be completed by September.
The Arts Department Mezzanine project will increase the capacity of the Arts Department by 50% to provide a large studio space to accommodate increasing demand for Arts courses within the College.
The project team has completed the RIBA Stage 2 design, submitted a planning application and appointed Kier Construction as Preferred Bidder via Procure Partnerships Framework. The project aims to be on site in early October 2020.
