Seddon Superlabs University of Derby
“The new Super Lab ensures our students develop the skills employers require, thereby enhancing graduate employability and contributing to the economic growth”
Vice-Chancellor, University of Derby

Seddon Construction has completed the Bioscience Superlab at the University of Derby’s Kedleston Road campus, a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility funded by £5.8m from the Office for Students, transforming the university’s offer across biomedical and life sciences.

Procured via the Procure Partnerships Framework
The Bioscience Superlab forms part of a broader investment in the University of Derby’s science facilities, building on the £1.75m OMICS Facility that opened in 2023. Together, the facilities create a world-class scientific environment at the Kedleston Road campus for students and researchers alike.
Two world-class facilities facilities under one roof
The completed building houses two connected spaces, the Bioscience Superlab and the Research Lab, designed to be used in tandem, supporting teaching, independent study, group collaboration and advanced research.
- Large open plan Bioscience Superlab
- BSL-II Research Lab for advanced research
- Laser Lab with confocal laser scanning microscope
- Tissue Lab for cell culture work
- Industry standard equipment throughout
- Disciplines: haematology, immunology, genetics, microbiology and more

Advancing research and graduate employability
Beyond teaching, the Research Lab is designed to elevate the quality and volume of research at Derby, supporting REF outcomes, attracting QR funding, and increasing postgraduate research completions. It will also strengthen the University’s capacity for consultancy and strategic industry partnerships.
The facility builds on Derby’s six key academic themes and positions the university as a leading regional hub for bioscience, with a growing cluster of high-quality research infrastructure on the Kedleston Road campus.

A new era for bioscience in Derby
Procured through the Procure Partnerships East Midlands Framework, the Bioscience Superlab gives the University of Derby a flagship scientific facility, equipping students with industry-ready skills and cementing the university’s position as a centre of excellence for bioscience research and education.

“The Bioscience Superlab is a really exciting project for our East Midlands Framework. Schemes like this are where the two-stage call-off method really helps, it gave the University and Seddon the time to properly work through the specialist requirements before getting on site. The finished facility speaks for itself, and it’s great to see Derby cementing its position as a serious centre for bioscience.”

Tom Woolley
Key Account Manager (East) Procure Partnerships Framework
“As an applied university, it is imperative that our students have the opportunity to gain practical skills through high quality learning and teaching in industry-standard, cutting edge facilities. The new Super Lab aligns with the University’s Strategic Framework by ensuring our students develop the skills employers require, thereby enhancing graduate employability and contributing to the economic growth of our region and the wider skills agenda. Biomedical Science is one of the University’s six key academic themes, so this funding will enable us to further develop and grow in this area.”
